Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment.

Symptoms show up in people within two to 14 days of exposure to the virus. A person infected with COVID-19 is contagious for up to two days before symptoms appear and can remain contagious for 10 to 20 days.

The best way to prevent and slow down the spread of COVID-19 is to protect yourself by getting vaccinated; washing your hands often; wearing a mask, if needed; and staying home when you feel sick.

SYMPTOMS

Not everyone infected with the virus will experience the same symptoms. Some may not even experience any symptoms. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. It is important to note that the virus can be spread regardless of symptom severity. If you are experiencing any symptoms, or suspect that you have been exposed to the virus, get tested for COVID-19.

COVID-19 symptoms may include:

  • fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • chills
  • body or muscle aches
  • fatigue
