Senior centers are a gathering place for people over the age of 55 to visit, learn, exercise, share a meal, and travel with each other! Many senior centers offer classes, health screens or activities that do have a fee, but many activities are also free. Contact the senior center in your area for more details.

YMCAs

Local YMCAs offer many social activities outside of the gym. They do have a monthly membership fee, but you can also contact your local branch for information on discounted memberships, scholarships, and participating in the Silver Sneakers program.

SOAR

SOAR is a local non-profit agency that supports people ages 5 to adulthood with differing abilities. SOAR sponsors and hosts over 300 activities every year. To participate, donate or volunteer, contact them here, or:

Special Olympics

Special Olympics provides year-round sports and athletic competitions for children and adults with disabilities. This can provide social opportunities, fitness, and promote healthy living. Some sports include: skiing, gymnastics, softball, volleyball, powerlifting, bowling, golfing, soccer, tennis, basketball and more. Contact them here, or:

Friendship Place, Inc.

Friendship Place, Inc. is a non-profit social, educational, and recreational mental health outreach program for people with mental illness. It is designed to encourage participation in activities and opportunities both at the outreach center and in the community.

If someone is interested in being a member, call to make an appointment to visit the facility for the first time. A staff member will meet with the individual to go over regulations/changes/expectations as they relate to COVID-19. After that, individuals are encouraged to come a few times to check the place out. If they are then interested in becoming a member and partaking in services, a staff member will sit down to complete the membership paperwork. The membership paperwork will consist of attaining a referral from any professional working with the individual that can verify that they have a primary diagnosis of a mental illness. Phone Pals Program

Volunteers make phone calls to individuals who are homebound or isolated. Calls will take place on a schedule agreed upon between a volunteer and the individual. Even though this is coordinated through Volunteer Fox Cities, they will serve all of Winnebago County. Contact them here, or:

Wellness Plus Classes

There are a number of classes held by the Winnebago County Public Health Department, such as: Tai Chi, Stepping On (fall prevention), and more. These are great ways to promote living healthy and socializing with new friends. Click here for more information.
