What is Access?
Access is the process of receiving, analyzing and documenting reports of alleged child maltreatment. The functions of Access are as follows:
- Receive and document reports of Child Abuse and Neglect from the community
- Identify families that the Child Protective Services (CPS) system must respond to
- Determine the urgency of the response time
- Initiate an assessment of child safety and family strengths
Why Report
We all have a stake in protecting children from abuse and neglect because the consequences of failing to do so are serious - for the children and for society.
What to Report
There are five basic types of Child Abuse and Neglect recognized in Wisconsin's laws:
- Physical abuse
- Neglect
- Sexual abuse, including sex trafficking
- Emotional abuse
- Threatened abuse or neglect
Child Protective Services Team Mission Statement
To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, in accordance with federal and state mandates, by assisting children and families to utilize their strengths, family supports, and community resources.
Initial Assessment
Initial assessment is the process of:
- Assessing alleged maltreatment
- Assessing the family condition to determine if the conditions and/or behaviors in the home pose a risk to a child's safety
- Determining what services may be needed to help the family enhance parental protective capacities to establish a safe environment for the child(ren)
Ongoing Services
Services provided are based on inclusive assessments and discussions with the family. This process establishes goals that achieve measurable outcomes. The primary role of the caseworker in Ongoing Services is to engage families in a positive working relationship. This is crucial in achieving a safe, stable home and permanence for children.
