Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer overall and the leading cause in non-smokers.  You can’t see or smell radon. Testing is the only way to know your level of exposure.

Due to the high radon levels in Winnebago County, we recommend all homes be tested.

How does radon enter the home?

How to Stay Safe:

  • Testing is the only way to know if you have radon in your home. Hardware and home stores sell low-cost radon test kits. We also sell kits for $10 each at our Oshkosh and Neenah officesDuring January, radon test kits are $5 at the Winnebago County Public Health Department and Oshkosh Farmers Market (Jan. 6 & 27).
  • If testing shows a radon problem, you will need to install a system that will prevent radon from building up in your home. The system should be installed by a certified mitigation contractor. Check out the certified contractor listings.
  • Radon reduction systems can reduce radon levels in your home by up to 99%. Radon reduction systems can be built into new homes. Learn more about lowering your home's radon level.
